With Ketel Marte sidelined due to injury, the Arizona Diamondbacks face a unique decision that could alter their roster dramatically based on the outcome. The question: should they promote top prospect Jordan Lawlar to fill the void, or continue with Tim Tawa, who has been handling second base duties? Let's delve into the pros and cons of calling up Lawlar, considering current performances and organizational strategies.

🔼 Pros: The Case for Calling Up Jordan Lawlar

1. Offensive Upside

Lawlar has been impressive at Triple-A Reno, posting a .295 batting average with 2 home runs, 11 RBIs, and 4 stolen bases over 61 at-bats, resulting in a robust .895 OPS.  His recent performance includes a two-run homer on April 11, showcasing his readiness to contribute offensively at the major league level.

2. Defensive Versatility

Primarily a shortstop, Lawlar's athleticism and range suggest he could adapt to second base or third base potentially, providing the team with flexibility in the infield. With Geno's contract coming to an end after this season, we have to wonder what our long-term solution is at 3B, especially with Marte and Domo already locked up for years to come. If Lawlar comes up and plays well, we now can DH Suarez or Marte a bit more and save their legs over the course of the season.

3. Long-Term Development

Introducing Lawlar to the majors now could accelerate his development, allowing him to gain valuable experience and adjust to big-league pitching, which would be beneficial for the team's future. If he performs well, it creates some flexibility to maybe trade away other players to fill other potential gaps at the deadline to help the D-backs compete this year or for the next few years.

🔽 Cons: Reasons to Hold Off on Promoting Lawlar

1. Previous MLB Struggles

In his brief stint with the Diamondbacks, Lawlar struggled, recording a .129 batting average over 31 at-bats.  Rushing him back could hinder his confidence and development. Nobody wants to rush Lawlar to the big leagues, but when is it time to see what you have with him?

2. Service Time Considerations

Promoting Lawlar now could start his service time clock earlier than necessary, potentially impacting team control and arbitration timelines.

3. Current Infield Options

Tim Tawa, although not producing standout numbers, has been serviceable at second base. Over 14 at-bats, he has a .214 average with 4 RBIs, providing a stopgap solution while Marte recovers. Tawa doesn't look like a full-on superstar by any means, but he has proven himself to be a solid player who can contribute at this level, but to what extent is the question. In my opinion he looks like a utility infielder with a maybe a little more pop than most. Honestly he could be a clone of G. Hampson with a little more upside.

The Diamondbacks have got to weigh the immediate benefits of promoting Lawlar against the potential long-term implications, but this is no simple choice. While his Triple-A performance is promising, considerations around his previous MLB struggles and service time are significant. Monitoring Tawa's performance and Marte's recovery will be crucial in making an informed decision that balances the team's present needs with future aspirations. Lawlar could be a potential X-factor for this D-backs team and his performance dictates how the roster changes in the coming seasons. What are your thoughts D-Backs fans??
