"Sedona 9" Week #3

Arizona Diamondback's Weekly Recap of Games Played During April 7–13, 2025

The Arizona Diamondbacks showed some grit and some flashes of their full potential this past week, going 4-2 across two key series against the Orioles and Brewers. The offense didn't exactly find their rhythm, but did come up big with timely hitting from the heart of the lineup. The pitching staff turned in a pair of statement performances that helped steady the ship. Despite a few inconsistencies, especially from the starting rotation, Arizona looked more like the balanced, playoff-contending squad fans expected to see entering the year. As they head into the next stretch with a 9-7 record, the D-backs sit in the thick of the NL West race and appear to be finding their identity. This week’s Sedona 9 highlights the breakout bats, bullpen standouts, and lingering struggles that defined their play from April 7–13.

Top 3 Performers

1. Corbin Carroll (OF)

Carroll continued to be the driving force behind the D-backs' offense this week. Over six games, he has a .333 batting average, and went 8-for-24 with 2 home runs and 5 RBIs over this week. His on-base percentage has risen to .425, and he has an OPS of 1.123. Corbin is consistently showing that he is the catalyst for the team's offensive output. If he continues to be consistent, he may be chasing an NL MVP trophy this year.

2. Brandon Pfaadt (SP)

Pfaadt delivered a stellar performance on April 9 against the Orioles. He pitched six scoreless innings, allowing only four hits, striking out three, and walking two. This outing lowered his ERA to 3.00 for the season and earned him his second win. Pfaadt's command and poise on the mound were evident, as he effectively neutralized the Orioles' lineup. His contribution was a key factor in the team's dominant 9-0 victory.

3. Josh Naylor (1B)

Naylor was a significant contributor to the D-backs' offense this week. He now holds a .322 batting average, with 1 HR and 10 RBIs and a surprising 4 SB. His slugging percentage is .475, and he maintains an on-base percentage of .397. In the April 9 game against the Orioles, Naylor went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer, playing a pivotal role in the team's 9-0 win. His power-hitting has been a catalyst for the Diamondbacks' offensive momentum.

Bottom 3 Performers

1. Zac Gallen (SP)

Gallen faced challenges on the mound during his April 7 start against the Orioles. He pitched five innings, allowing five runs on seven hits, including a solo home run. His ERA for the season rose to 4.64, and he recorded his second loss. Gallen's struggles with command were evident, as he walked two batters and struck out four. Gallen did rebound with a quality start on Sunday vs the Brewers going 6 IP and striking out 5. The only real mistake being an early 2 run HR given up in the first inning.

2. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (LF)

Gurriel Jr. experienced a slump at the plate this week. Over six games, he managed a .145 batting average, going 3-for-20 with no home runs and only one RBI. His on-base percentage was .200, and he slugged .200, indicating a lack of extra-base hits. In the April 11 game against the Brewers, Gurriel went 0-for-4, contributing to the team's 7-0 loss. Gurriel Jr. did have a game-winning Sac-Fly to cap up the dramatic 5 run 9th inning comeback victory Saturday night, which leaves a glimmer of hope he can rebound and find his true form soon.

3. Gabriel Moreno (C)

Moreno's offensive output was limited this week. He posted a .222 batting average over five games, going 4-for-18 with no home runs and one RBI. His on-base percentage stood at .263, and he slugged .222, reflecting a lack of power-hitting. In the April 11 game against the Brewers, Moreno went 0-for-3, struggling to make an impact at the plate. While his defensive skills remain solid, an uptick in offensive performance would benefit the team.

Top 3 Surprises

1. Alek Thomas (OF)

Thomas provided unexpected offensive contributions this week. In the April 13 game against the Brewers, he delivered a crucial two-run single in the eighth inning, extending the D-backs' lead to 5-2. Over five games, Thomas maintained a .286 batting average, going 4-for-14 with 3 RBIs. His timely hitting has been a pleasant surprise, adding depth to the lineup. Thomas's performance this week suggests potential for increased offensive impact moving forward.

2. A.J. Puk (RP)

Puk emerged as a reliable option out of the bullpen this week. He secured his third save of the season on April 13, striking out Jackson Chourio with two on in the ninth inning to preserve the 5-2 victory. Over three appearances, Puk pitched 3.1 scoreless innings, allowing only one hit and striking out four batters. His ERA now stands at 1.80, showcasing his effectiveness in high-leverage situations. Puk's performance has solidified his role as a dependable closer for the Diamondbacks.

3. Geraldo Perdomo (SS)

Perdomo continued to impress with his consistent offensive production. He led the team with a .333 batting average over six games, going 8-for-24 with 1 home run and 4 RBIs. His on-base percentage was .448, and he slugged .500, contributing both in getting on base and driving in runs. In the April 9 game against the Orioles, Perdomo went 3-for-4 with a solo homer, playing a key role in the 9-0 victory. His steady performance at the plate has been a valuable asset for the Diamondbacks.

Looking ahead, the Diamondbacks embark on a six-game road trip, starting with a three-game series against the Miami Marlins from April 15–17, followed by a weekend set at Wrigley Field against the Chicago Cubs from April 18–20. With the D-backs currently holding a 9–7 record, this road trip will be crucial in maintaining momentum and solidifying their position in the ultra-competitive NL West. Consistent performances from both the offense and pitching staff will be key to a successful week.
